Sisters
2018, Vibehouse, Carrboro NC
Mixed media sculpture, 3.5' x 4.25' x 1.25'; 1.25' x 1.75' x 8" Materials: cotton fiber, teeth, hair, sweet gum seed pods, bike tires Industrial sewing thread and bike tires weave together to create the blanket-like object of Sisters. Initially, the sculpture evokes a sense of safety through the density of the object and the texture of the soft fiber and worn rubber marrying en masse. But, the piece is nailed to two walls, the corner behind the piece is untouched, yet viewers cannot see behind it or through the sculpture. Further inspection reveals hair bundled in the cream colored fiber creating pillows holding sweet gum seed pods that have released their seeds, but teeth are inserted into the openings, suggesting stillbirth of ideas, understanding and ultimately, life. |
