My World of Pink Plastic

Week one at the Torpedo Factory was incredible! I started working on  casts of orange peels, an idea I began working through at Penland School of Craft over the summer. I'm making multiples of these casts, and plan to install the piece on the ceiling almost in chandelier formation.  I only have 25 molds, but I think I've made about 300 pieces... My studio is very crowded at the moment!

Not only am I  in the process of making casts, I am also producing new batches of bioplastic. I make the bioplastic from scratch, and I love working with the material because it's easy to make, and there are so many variations the plastic can take on. The new pieces I am making are pink - tinted with with natural fiber dye (LAC and Madder). I had to go buy more shelves for the studio this morning to clear some floor space to start working on another piece. All of the work I am making in my first few weeks here at TFAC is part of my show Incidence, opening October 19th at the Durham Art Guild's SunTrust Gallery at the Durham Art Council in Durham, NC.

My time here has been very fulfilling. Living in the DC area is beautiful and I'm so happy to be back in my home town. My commute to TFAC includes driving past the capitol and walking in Founders Park, right on the Potomac River, which is nice because doggos hang out there. More sightseeing in my future - I just need to make it to Incidence first!
